What Researchers Did
Researchers described a case of a 28-year-old woman who experienced severe hearing loss in both ears after a mild COVID-19 infection.
What They Found
The patient developed complete deafness in her right ear and severe hearing loss in her left ear three weeks after a mild COVID-19 infection. Her hearing did not improve after treatments including systemic corticosteroids and hyperbaric oxygen therapy. However, a cochlear implant in her right ear was successfully performed, leading to significant improvement in her ability to communicate.
What This Means for Canadian Patients
This case shows that even a mild COVID-19 infection can lead to severe, lasting sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) that may not respond to standard treatments like HBOT. For Canadian patients experiencing similar profound hearing loss, cochlear implantation could be an effective option to restore communication abilities.
Canadian Relevance
No direct Canadian connection identified.
Study Limitations
As a case report, this study describes the experience of only one patient, so its findings may not apply to everyone.
