What Researchers Did
Researchers used full-field and fractional erbium:yttrium-aluminum-garnet (Er:YAG) laser to treat a recalcitrant foot ulcer in a 43-year-old man with lower leg arteriopathy.
What They Found
A 43-year-old man with a recalcitrant foot ulcer, previously treated with 30 sessions of hyperbaric oxygen therapy, showed a decrease in ulcer dimensions by the second month after Er:YAG laser treatment. The ulcer remained healed without recurrence during the first-year control period.
What This Means for Canadian Patients
This case report suggests that Er:YAG laser therapy could be a promising alternative for Canadian patients suffering from recalcitrant foot ulcers, especially those unresponsive to standard treatments. It may offer a new option for wound healing and preventing recurrence in complex cases.
Canadian Relevance
This study has no direct Canadian connection as it was not conducted in Canada, nor does it involve Canadian researchers or patients.
Study Limitations
A significant limitation of this study is that it is a single case report, which limits the generalizability of its findings.
