What Researchers Did
This registry-based observational study evaluated the effect of adjunctive hyperbaric oxygen therapy in adult patients with central retinal artery occlusion in Korea.
What They Found
Out of 19 enrolled patients with central retinal artery occlusion, 10 (52.6%) received adjunctive hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBO2). The HBO2 group showed a significantly higher change in best-corrected visual acuity compared to the no HBO2 group (p=0.043), indicating greater visual improvement.
What This Means for Canadian Patients
Canadian patients experiencing central retinal artery occlusion might potentially benefit from adjunctive hyperbaric oxygen therapy to improve their visual outcomes. However, this treatment should be discussed with an ophthalmologist, as its availability and standard practice may vary.
Canadian Relevance
This study was conducted in Korea and does not have a direct Canadian connection.
Study Limitations
This was a registry-based observational study with a small sample size of 19 patients, which limits the generalizability of the findings.
