What Researchers Did
Researchers retrospectively analyzed 201 type 2 diabetic foot patients who underwent amputation to evaluate factors influencing one-year and five-year mortality and compare major and minor amputations.
What They Found
For one-year mortality, cerebrovascular disease increased death by 2.463 times (p=0.002), minor amputation by 2.284 times (p=0.006), and each unit increase in age by 1.05 times (p=0.008). Chronic renal failure significantly increased five-year mortality by 3.164 times (p<0.001).
What This Means for Canadian Patients
Canadian patients with diabetic foot undergoing amputation, especially those with cerebrovascular disease or chronic renal failure, face higher mortality risks. This highlights the importance of comprehensive comorbidity management and careful consideration of amputation level to improve long-term outcomes.

Study Limitations
As a retrospective study, it may be subject to selection bias and limitations due to reliance on existing medical records.
