What Researchers Did
Researchers conducted a prospective cohort study to evaluate the effect of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) on retinal thickness and retinopathy progression in 30 patients with type 2 diabetes.
What They Found
The study found no significant difference in central macular thickness (CMT) at subfoveal and nasal points between groups. However, CMT at the temporal point was significantly higher in patients with mild-moderate non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy after 20 sessions of HBOT (p=0.019). This group also showed a significant increase in nasal and temporal CMT over time (p<0.05).
What This Means for Canadian Patients
Canadian patients with type 2 diabetes undergoing hyperbaric oxygen therapy for diabetic foot ulcers might experience changes in retinal thickness, particularly in early stages of retinopathy. These findings suggest that HBOT's impact on eye health in diabetic patients warrants further investigation and careful monitoring.
Canadian Relevance
This study was not conducted in Canada and does not have a direct Canadian connection.
Study Limitations
A key limitation of this study is its non-randomized cohort design, which may introduce bias and limit the generalizability of the findings.
