What Researchers Did
Researchers conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of observational trials to evaluate the efficacy of hyperbaric oxygen therapy for necrotizing soft tissue infections.
What They Found
Among 49,152 patients, hyperbaric oxygen therapy significantly reduced the mortality rate by nearly half (RR = 0.522) and the incidence of multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (RR = 0.205) in patients with necrotizing soft tissue infections. However, patients receiving hyperbaric oxygen therapy underwent a higher number of debridements, with no significant difference in amputation rates.
What This Means for Canadian Patients
Canadian patients with necrotizing soft tissue infections may experience improved survival rates and reduced risk of multiple organ dysfunction syndrome if treated with hyperbaric oxygen therapy. While this therapy might lead to more debridement procedures, the potential for better overall outcomes warrants consideration as an adjunctive treatment.
Canadian Relevance
This study did not include any Canadian participants or research sites, therefore direct Canadian relevance is not established.
Study Limitations
The findings are limited by the inclusion of only observational, retrospective cohort and case-control studies, which inherently carry a higher risk of bias.
