What Researchers Did
Researchers retrospectively evaluated the long-term effects of hyperbaric oxygen treatment on 79 eyes of 70 patients with cystoid macular edema secondary to retinal vein occlusion.
What They Found
Immediately after therapy, visual acuity improved by two lines or more in 40 eyes (17%) with branch retinal vein occlusion (BRVO) and 10 eyes (44%) with central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO). Six months or more post-treatment, improvement persisted in 14 of 30 BRVO eyes (47%) but only one of 11 CRVO eyes (9%), indicating a poorer long-term prognosis for CRVO.
What This Means for Canadian Patients
Canadian patients with macular edema due to retinal vein occlusion might experience short-term visual improvement with hyperbaric oxygen treatment, particularly those with branch retinal vein occlusion. However, the long-term benefits appear limited, especially for central retinal vein occlusion.
Canadian Relevance
This study has no direct Canadian connection.
Study Limitations
The retrospective design and relatively small long-term follow-up cohorts, particularly for CRVO, limit the generalizability and strength of these findings.
