What Researchers Did
This retrospective study evaluated the effectiveness of COVID-19 preventive measures in a hyperbaric oxygen therapy center in Turkey between March and December 2020.
What They Found
Out of 122 patients who received hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) treatment, 5.7% (n=7) tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 during their treatment period, with 59.8% (n=73) considered at risk for severe clinical presentation. Additionally, two inside attendants (14.3%) were diagnosed with COVID-19, while the hyperbaric chamber was operated 608 times.
What This Means for Canadian Patients
Canadian patients requiring hyperbaric oxygen therapy can be reassured that with appropriate preventive measures, the risk of COVID-19 transmission within these facilities can be managed. However, continued vigilance and adherence to safety protocols remain crucial to protect both patients and healthcare staff.
Canadian Relevance
This study has no direct Canadian connection as it was conducted in a hyperbaric oxygen therapy center in Turkey.
Study Limitations
The study's retrospective, single-center design and limited duration may restrict the generalizability of its findings.
