What Researchers Did
A retrospective cohort study described the clinical characteristics and outcomes of COVID-19 patients treated by an after-hours house-call medical service in Japan while awaiting hospital admission.
What They Found
The after-hours house-call service treated 55 COVID-19 patients (17 Moderate I, 38 Moderate II) in Osaka and Tokyo. Approximately 30% of patients in both groups received out-of-hospital oxygen therapy. Overall, 16.4% of patients died, with 17.6% in the Moderate I group and 15.8% in the Moderate II group.
What This Means for Canadian Patients
This study suggests that after-hours house-call services could potentially offer an alternative for managing COVID-19 patients with moderate symptoms when hospital beds are scarce. Such services might help alleviate hospital burden and provide care to patients in their homes while awaiting admission.
Canadian Relevance
This study was conducted in Japan and has no direct Canadian connection.
Study Limitations
As a retrospective cohort study, this research may be limited by potential biases from incomplete data collection and confounding factors.
