What Researchers Did
Researchers studied 37 patients undergoing reconstructive surgery on their face and neck using their own local tissues to correct various defects.
What They Found
They found that 5 sessions of hyperbaric oxygenation (HBOT) at 1.5 atmospheres absolute (ATA) sharply reduced the incidence of complications after surgery. This effect was attributed to providing optimal conditions for accelerated microcirculatory improvement, oxygen transport, and tissue utilization.

Study Limitations
This study was small, conducted in 1989, and the abstract does not specify if a control group was used or provide long-term follow-up data.
