What Researchers Did
The researchers studied how long the levels of nitric oxide in exhaled breath, a marker for lung inflammation, stayed reduced after a single hyperbaric oxygen treatment.
What They Found
Immediately after a single hyperbaric oxygen session at 2.4 ATA for 90 minutes, exhaled nitric oxide levels in patients dropped significantly by 30.0%. This reduction persisted, with levels still 27.3% lower after 120 minutes. The levels had not fully returned to normal even after 240 minutes, while a control group showed no changes.
Canadian Relevance
This study was not conducted in Canada nor by Canadian authors. The abstract does not specify the conditions for which the patients were receiving HBO treatment, so it is not possible to determine if it covers a Health Canada-recognised indication. No direct Canadian connection identified.
Study Limitations
The study involved a small number of patients and did not specify the medical conditions for which they were receiving hyperbaric oxygen therapy.
