What Researchers Did
Researchers conducted a pilot study with 21 patients to see if hyperbaric oxygen therapy, given twice daily for up to three days, could help improve vision in people experiencing acute central retinal artery occlusion.
What They Found
Out of 21 patients, 19 reported subjective visual improvement, and this was objectively confirmed in 13 patients upon discharge. Nine patients initially saw increased visual acuity during hyperbaric oxygen treatment, though this was reduced by at least one line by discharge. Importantly, no patient experienced vision loss below their initial admission vision.
What This Means for Canadian Patients
For Canadian patients experiencing acute central retinal artery occlusion, this pilot study suggests that hyperbaric oxygen therapy could potentially help improve visual outcomes. HBOT may compensate for retinal ischemia, offering a potential benefit for vision preservation in this severe condition.
Canadian Relevance
No direct Canadian connection identified.
Study Limitations
This was a pilot study with a small number of patients, and hyperbaric oxygen therapy alone does not address the lack of glucose or accumulation of toxic metabolites in the retina.
