What Researchers Did
Researchers presented a case report of a 49-year-old male who developed cerebral arterial gas embolism (CAGE) after an esophagoduodenoscopy (EGD) biopsy.
What They Found
The patient received hyperbaric oxygen (HBO₂) therapy 39 hours after the event, representing the longest reported delay for CAGE secondary to EGD. Despite initially presenting non-responsive with decorticate posturing, he was discharged to rehabilitation with only mild left upper extremity weakness.
What This Means for Canadian Patients
This case suggests that even with significant delays in treatment, patients experiencing cerebral arterial gas embolism may still achieve a favorable outcome. It highlights the potential benefit of hyperbaric oxygen therapy even when not administered immediately.
Canadian Relevance
This study has no direct Canadian connection.
Study Limitations
As a case report, this study's findings are based on a single patient and may not be generalizable to a broader population.
