What Researchers Did
Researchers investigated a new approach to radiosensitisation combining moderate hypothermia, hyperbaric oxygen, and pharmacological vasodilatation in 29 patients with advanced mouth cancer.
What They Found
Among 29 patients with advanced mouth cancer, five of nine (56%) were disease-free after 2 years, and 10 of 21 (48%) were disease-free after 1 year. Fifteen patients experienced local failure, and there were three intercurrent deaths, but the approach appeared practical, safe, and promising.
What This Means for Canadian Patients
This early research suggests a potential strategy to enhance the effectiveness of radiation therapy for advanced mouth cancer by improving oxygenation within tumors. If proven effective in larger, more modern studies, this approach could potentially lead to improved disease control for Canadian patients undergoing radiotherapy.
Canadian Relevance
This study has no direct Canadian connection as it was conducted elsewhere.
Study Limitations
This was a feasibility study with a small patient cohort, limiting the generalizability and definitive conclusions regarding its efficacy.
