What Researchers Did
Researchers investigated the effects of hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) exposure on various parameters of stored blood over 21 days, comparing HBO-treated blood to control blood from the same donors.
What They Found
They found that while glucose and pH levels decreased in stored blood, these decreases were less pronounced in the hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) exposed group. Additionally, mean corpuscular and platelet volumes, which tended to increase during storage, remained lower and nearer physiologic levels with HBO exposure (2.5 atm for 90 min), and osmotic fragility was more stable.
Canadian Relevance
This study was conducted in Turkey and has no direct Canadian connection.
Study Limitations
A limitation is that this was a relatively small-scale in vitro study on stored blood, and further research is needed to confirm these effects in clinical settings.
