What Researchers Did
Doctors reported a case of a man in his 40s who developed air emboli in his brain during a carotid artery stenting procedure and was treated with HBOT.
What They Found
After a single HBOT session, CT imaging showed complete resolution of the brain air emboli and small hemorrhages. The patient was extubated, showed neurological improvement, and was discharged with only mild residual speech difficulties. The case confirms air embolism as a rare complication of neurointerventional procedures.
What This Means for Canadian Patients
Arterial gas embolism is an OHIP-covered emergency indication for HBOT in Ontario. For Canadian patients undergoing brain artery procedures, this case reinforces that HBOT should be available as an emergency backup at hospitals performing neurointerventional procedures. A single treatment session was sufficient to clear the emboli in this patient.
Canadian Relevance
Arterial gas embolism is a covered OHIP indication for HBOT in Ontario. This case supports emergency HBOT access at Canadian hospitals performing neurointerventional procedures.
Study Limitations
This is a single case report and cannot establish how frequently one HBOT session is sufficient for procedure-related air emboli.
