What Researchers Did
Researchers treated hematopoietic (Jurkat, NCI-H929) and non-hematopoietic (A549, MCF-7) cancer cells with hyperbaric oxygen (HBO2) at 2.5 to 3.5 atmosphere absolute (ATA) for 6 hours to investigate apoptosis.
What They Found
They found a significant percentage of apoptosis only in hematopoietic Jurkat and NCI-H929 cells, which also exhibited higher oxidative stress after HBO2 treatment. This treatment led to caspase-3 and caspase-7 activation, further cleavage of PARP, and increased phosphorylation of p38 MAPK in these specific cell types.
Canadian Relevance
This study has no direct Canadian connection as it was not conducted in Canada or by Canadian researchers.
Study Limitations
A key limitation is that this study was conducted on isolated cancer cell lines in a laboratory setting, not in living patients or animal models.
