What Researchers Did
Chinese researchers compared attention and executive brain function in 98 subarachnoid hemorrhage patients, 51 who received early HBOT alongside standard rehabilitation versus 47 who received only physical therapy.
What They Found
The HBOT group had a lower rate of delayed cerebral ischemia (a dangerous post-hemorrhage complication) (P = 0.026) and significantly better executive control function at 6-month testing (P < 0.001). Basic attention functions like alerting and orienting did not differ between groups.
What This Means for Canadian Patients
For Canadians who survive a brain aneurysm rupture, one of the most feared complications is a second wave of brain damage from vessel spasm that occurs days later. This study shows early HBOT may help prevent that secondary damage and protect the specific thinking skills most affected by subarachnoid hemorrhage.
Canadian Relevance
No direct Canadian connection identified.
Study Limitations
Patient assignment to treatment groups was not randomized, which means sicker patients may have been less likely to receive HBOT, making the HBOT group appear to do better than it would in a true controlled trial.
