What Researchers Did
Researchers described the case of a 59-year-old man with severe frostbite who received hyperbaric oxygen therapy and a specialized surgical flap to save his hand.
What They Found
The patient had extensive frostbite to his face, ears, and both hands after climbing Mount Everest. Despite requiring amputation of his right hand due to dry gangrene, surgeons were able to preserve 1.5-2 cm of viable bone in all five finger stumps. This allowed for a two-stage abdominal pedicled flap reconstruction, resulting in stable, partially sensate digital stumps with preserved length and joint motion at 10-month follow-up.

Study Limitations
As a case report, this study describes the experience of only one patient, meaning its findings may not apply to all individuals with severe frostbite.
