What Researchers Did
Researchers reported a case of cerebral arterial air embolism following computed tomography-guided hook-wire localization of a pulmonary nodule in a 64-year-old man.
What They Found
A 64-year-old man developed convulsions after CT-guided hook-wire localization of a 1 cm pulmonary nodule in his right lower lobe. Cranial CT revealed gas in the territory of the right middle cerebral artery, and despite treatment, the patient experienced clinical death 55 hours after the air embolism.
What This Means for Canadian Patients
Canadian patients undergoing CT-guided pulmonary interventions should be aware of the rare but potentially fatal risk of cerebral arterial air embolism. While uncommon, this complication underscores the importance of vigilant monitoring during and after such procedures.
Canadian Relevance
This case report has no direct Canadian connection.
Study Limitations
As a single case report, the findings may not be generalizable to all patients undergoing similar procedures.
