What Researchers Did
Researchers used resting-state fMRI in 20 healthy young adults to examine the effect of hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) on cognitive performance and spontaneous brain activity compared to a placebo.
What They Found
Compared to the placebo group, the hyperbaric oxygen group showed significantly increased scores in spatial working memory and memory quotient. They also observed significantly increased regional homogeneity (ReHo) values in the left hippocampus, right inferior frontal, and lingual gyri, with enhanced functional connectivity in these areas.
What This Means for Canadian Patients
While this study involved healthy young adults, the findings suggest that increased oxygen availability might potentially improve memory performance. Further research is needed to determine if hyperbaric oxygen could offer practical cognitive benefits for Canadian patients with certain memory impairments.
Canadian Relevance
This study has no direct Canadian connection as it was not conducted in Canada, nor did it involve Canadian participants or researchers.
Study Limitations
This was a preliminary study with a small sample size of 20 healthy young adults, limiting the generalizability of the findings.
