What Researchers Did
Researchers retrospectively reviewed 50 cases of sudden deafness to assess the effect of adding hyperbaric oxygen therapy to conventional treatment and the influence of patient age.
What They Found
Patients receiving hyperbaric oxygen therapy in addition to conventional treatment showed a mean hearing gain of 37.9 dB, significantly higher than the 20.0 dB gain in those receiving conventional treatment alone (P < 0.05). This benefit was more pronounced in patients younger than 50 years, who experienced a mean gain of 51.4 dB, compared to 23.3 dB in those older than 50 years (P 0.05).
What This Means for Canadian Patients
Canadian patients experiencing sudden deafness, particularly those under 50 years old, might see improved hearing outcomes if hyperbaric oxygen therapy is added to their conventional treatment. However, older patients, especially those over 60, may not experience significant additional benefit from this therapy.
Canadian Relevance
This study was not conducted in Canada and does not have a direct Canadian connection.
Study Limitations
As a retrospective study, this research is limited by its design, which may introduce biases and limit the generalizability of the findings.
