What Researchers Did
Researchers evaluated the dynamics of brain function and cognitive abilities in 56 patients with encephalopathy due to neurotoxicant poisoning, comparing various treatment methods during rehabilitation.
What They Found
All patients initially showed marked EEG changes and nearly all (97.5% in the main group, 100% in the comparison group) had cognitive impairment. Overall, 60% of patients experienced positive changes after treatment, with the combined therapy of mexidol, mesodiencephalic modulation (MDM), and hyperbaric oxygenation (HBO) showing the highest positive dynamics at 80% and neuropsychological test performance improving by 62.5%.
What This Means for Canadian Patients
Canadian patients recovering from neurotoxicant poisoning may benefit more from a combination of pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments, such as mexidol, mesodiencephalic modulation, and hyperbaric oxygenation. This approach could lead to better recovery of brain function and cognitive abilities compared to single therapies.
Canadian Relevance
This study has no direct Canadian connection.
Study Limitations
A limitation of this study is the relatively small sample size within each treatment subgroup, which may affect the generalizability of the findings.
