What Researchers Did
Researchers investigated the acute effects of hyperbaric oxygen (HBO2) on nitric oxide (NO) generation in healthy subjects through two experiments measuring exhaled NO, plasma and salivary nitrate/nitrite, and other related biomarkers.
What They Found
Hyperbaric oxygen acutely reduced orally exhaled NO by 30% and nasally exhaled NO by 16%. There was also a marked decrease in the salivary nitrite/nitrate ratio during and after HBO2, suggesting reduced bacterial conversion of nitrate to nitrite and NO.
Canadian Relevance
This study has no direct Canadian connection.
Study Limitations
The study was conducted on healthy subjects and focused on acute effects, limiting the generalizability of findings to patient populations or long-term HBO2 exposure.
