What Researchers Did
Researchers investigated the effects of hyperbaric oxygen therapy on brain perfusion, cognition, and behavior in a 15-year-old girl with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder.
What They Found
After 100 courses of hyperbaric oxygen therapy over 6 months, the patient showed improved brain perfusion in the left cerebellum and right frontal lobe, along with increased functional brain volume. These improvements were accompanied by better immediate cognitive test scores, and at 18-month follow-up, sustained improvements in attention, math skills, and writing were observed, eliminating the need for methylphenidate.
What This Means for Canadian Patients
This single case study suggests that hyperbaric oxygen therapy might offer a potential avenue for improving brain function and cognitive abilities in individuals with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder. However, due to the extremely limited scope of this research, Canadian patients should not consider this a proven or recommended treatment without extensive further study.
Canadian Relevance
This study has no direct Canadian connection as it was not conducted in Canada, nor does it involve Canadian researchers or patients.
Study Limitations
The primary limitation of this study is its design as a single case report, which prevents generalization of these findings to a broader population.
