What Researchers Did
Researchers randomized 60 patients with incomplete spinal cord injury, depression, and anxiety into three groups (hyperbaric oxygen, psychotherapy, or conventional rehabilitation) to assess the effects of these therapies over 8 weeks.
What They Found
After 8 weeks, both hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) and psychotherapy groups showed significantly lower Hamilton Depression (HAMD) scores compared to the control group (P < 0.05). The HBO group also demonstrated significantly lower Hamilton Anxiety (HAMA) scores than the control group (P < 0.05), with no significant difference in HAMD or HAMA scores between the HBO and psychotherapy groups.
What This Means for Canadian Patients
Canadian patients with incomplete spinal cord injury experiencing depression and anxiety may benefit from hyperbaric oxygen therapy or psychotherapy as adjuncts to conventional rehabilitation. These findings suggest potential non-pharmacological approaches to improve mental health outcomes in this patient population.
Canadian Relevance
This study was not conducted in Canada and does not have a direct Canadian connection.
Study Limitations
The study's relatively small sample size (60 patients) and short 8-week duration may limit the generalizability and long-term implications of the findings.
