What Researchers Did
Researchers conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate the efficacy and safety of hyperbaric oxygen therapy for fibromyalgia.
What They Found
This meta-analysis included nine studies with a total of 288 patients. Researchers found that hyperbaric oxygen therapy significantly relieved pain in fibromyalgia patients compared to control interventions (standardised mean difference=-1.56, 95% CI -2.18 to -0.93, p<0.001). Most studies also indicated improvements in tender points, fatigue, and sleep disturbance.
What This Means for Canadian Patients
Canadian patients with fibromyalgia might consider discussing hyperbaric oxygen therapy as a potential treatment option with their healthcare providers. While promising for pain and other symptoms, access and suitability for this specialized therapy should be evaluated individually.
Canadian Relevance
This study did not include any Canadian participants or research sites, so its direct Canadian relevance is not established.
Study Limitations
The meta-analysis included a relatively small number of studies and patients, and reported moderate heterogeneity in pain assessment, which may limit the generalizability of the findings.
