What Researchers Did
Researchers conducted a study where 61 stroke patients with depression were randomly assigned to receive either hyperbaric oxygen therapy or a sham treatment, then monitored their depression scores and inflammation markers for four weeks.
What They Found
Patients receiving HBOT showed significantly lower depression scores at both two and four weeks compared to the sham group (p=0.017 and p<0.01, respectively). Additionally, their blood levels of inflammatory markers like CRP, IL-6, and TNF-α were significantly reduced in the HBOT group (all p<0.01). The study also found that improvements in depression scores were linked to these reductions in IL-6 and TNF-α.

Study Limitations
This study was relatively small and further large-scale trials are needed to confirm the long-term effectiveness of HBOT for post-stroke depression.
