What Researchers Did
Researchers conducted a retrospective review of 9 cases in 7 patients with intermediate stage osteoradionecrosis (ORN) who received debridement and either fascio-cutaneous or fascio-periosteal free flap reconstruction.
What They Found
All 9 cases were Notani grade II, with 6 Epstein stage IIa and 3 Epstein stage IIIa, predominantly affecting the mandible (n=8). Following debridement, 3 cases used fascio-cutaneous free flaps and 6 cases used temporoparietal fascio-periosteal free flaps. No recurrence or progression of ORN was observed at the surgical site, although 2 patients developed additional sites of ORN.
What This Means for Canadian Patients
This study suggests that Canadian patients with intermediate stage osteoradionecrosis (ORN) might benefit from an active surgical approach involving debridement and free flap reconstruction. This could potentially prevent local recurrence or progression of the disease at the treated site.
Canadian Relevance
This study has no direct Canadian connection as it was not conducted in Canada or with Canadian participants.
Study Limitations
The retrospective design and small sample size of 7 patients limit the generalizability of these findings.
