What Researchers Did
Researchers retrospectively studied 40 acute spinal cord injury patients to assess the therapeutic effect of hyperbaric oxygen treatment using MRI and electrophysiology.
What They Found
Hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) treatment significantly improved motor and neurological functions in acute SCI patients at 15 and 30 days post-treatment compared to controls (P<0.05). MRI showed significantly lower grade III injury in the HBO group, and electrophysiology indicated increased evoked potential amplitudes and conduction velocities (P<0.05).
What This Means for Canadian Patients
Canadian patients with acute spinal cord injury might potentially benefit from hyperbaric oxygen therapy as an adjunct to standard medical treatment. This could lead to improved neurological recovery and reduced lesion severity.
Canadian Relevance
This study was conducted in China and has no direct Canadian connection.
Study Limitations
The retrospective design and non-randomized patient assignment are key limitations of this study.
