What Researchers Did
Researchers administered hyperbaric oxygen therapy to a patient with reflex sympathetic dystrophy syndrome (RSD) of the left foot and ankle.
What They Found
The patient reported reduced pain in her foot within 15 minutes of the first hyperbaric oxygen treatment (46 minutes at 60 fsw), with the foot also becoming less cyanotic and warmer. Subsequent treatments led to continued and prolonged improvement in her condition.
What This Means for Canadian Patients
This case report suggests that hyperbaric oxygen therapy might offer a potential therapeutic option for Canadian patients experiencing reflex sympathetic dystrophy syndrome. However, more robust research is needed before widespread clinical application.
Canadian Relevance
This study has no direct Canadian connection.
Study Limitations
As a single case report, the findings cannot be generalized to a broader patient population.
