What Researchers Did
Researchers reviewed 47 published studies spanning 60 years (32 animal, 11 clinical, 4 volunteer) to identify which treatment factors most predict whether HBOT helps burn patients.
What They Found
Of 94 experiments analyzed, 67.4% showed positive outcomes, 17.9% were mixed, and 14.7% were negative. The only factor that independently predicted a better outcome was treatment pressure: pressures below 3 ATA were significantly associated with better results (p=0.0005). Higher pressures did not improve and may have worsened outcomes.
What This Means for Canadian Patients
For burn patients in Canada, where major burn centers are located in Toronto, Vancouver, and Edmonton, this finding suggests that if HBOT is used, lower pressure protocols under 3 ATA may be preferable. Patients and families should ask about chamber pressure when HBOT is offered as part of burn care.
Canadian Relevance
No direct Canadian connection identified.
Study Limitations
The majority of included studies are animal experiments, and the 11 clinical studies had very different designs, making it difficult to draw clear recommendations for human patients.
