What Researchers Did
The researchers conducted a retrospective observational trial to evaluate the effect of hyperbaric oxygen therapy on 49 patients who developed acute neurological deficits following cardiac surgery.
What They Found
Before hyperbaric oxygen therapy, the average motor deficit score was 2.45 and speech disorder score was 0.55. After treatment, these scores improved significantly to 1.12 and 0.27, respectively (α=0.0001, α=0.009). The majority of patients (n=23) experienced an overall improvement of 2 score-points.
What This Means for Canadian Patients
This study suggests that hyperbaric oxygen therapy may improve motor and speech deficits in patients experiencing ischemic stroke after cardiac surgery. Patients experiencing such complications might potentially benefit from this treatment, though further research is needed.
Canadian Relevance
This study does not have a direct Canadian connection.
Study Limitations
This was a retrospective observational trial with a small sample size (49 patients), limiting its ability to establish causality and generalizability.
