What Researchers Did
Researchers reviewed the medical records of six children with neuromuscular spine deformity who received hyperbaric oxygen therapy for deep postoperative infections.
What They Found
All six patients experienced resolution of their infections. Wound healing, normal blood tests, and stopping antibiotics occurred within a median of 3 months. All patients also showed successful bony fusion and intact spinal implants after an average of 54 months.
What This Means for Canadian Patients
For Canadian children with complex spine deformities who develop deep infections after surgery, hyperbaric oxygen therapy could be a safe and helpful additional treatment. This approach might help them recover without needing to remove implants or undergo more major surgeries, improving their long-term health.
Canadian Relevance
No direct Canadian connection identified.
Study Limitations
The study was limited by its very small sample size of only six patients, making it difficult to generalize the findings to a larger population.
