What Researchers Did
Researchers retrospectively evaluated the efficacy of hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) therapy as an adjunct to mild hypertensive hypervolemia in 43 patients with symptomatic vasospasm following acute aneurysm surgery.
What They Found
Cerebral infarcts developed in 4 of 17 patients receiving HBO therapy without initial infarcts, compared to 12 of 19 patients receiving mild hypertensive hypervolemia alone. A good outcome was achieved by 76% (13 of 17) of patients in the HBO group without initial infarcts, versus 37% (7 of 19) in the hypervolemia-alone group, and 80% of HBO responders had a good outcome with no reported complications.
What This Means for Canadian Patients
For Canadian patients experiencing symptomatic vasospasm after aneurysm surgery, hyperbaric oxygen therapy combined with mild hypertensive hypervolemia may offer a beneficial treatment option. This approach could potentially reduce the risk of cerebral infarction and improve overall outcomes.
Canadian Relevance

Study Limitations
As a retrospective study, it is limited by its observational design, potential for selection bias, and lack of randomization.
