What Researchers Did
Researchers conducted a phase I-II study to assess the feasibility and effect of hyperbaric oxygen therapy on cognitive function in seven patients with cognitive disorders following brain irradiation.
What They Found
All seven patients completed the hyperbaric oxygen treatment and extensive neuropsychological testing. One out of seven patients showed a meaningful improvement in neuropsychological functioning. Overall, six out of seven patients eventually demonstrated improvement in a median of 2.5 out of 31 tests, though these improvements were not statistically significant.
What This Means for Canadian Patients
For Canadian patients experiencing cognitive disorders after brain irradiation, this small study suggests hyperbaric oxygen therapy may offer very limited and non-significant benefits. Therefore, it is not currently a widely supported treatment option for this condition.
Canadian Relevance
This study has no direct Canadian connection or specific relevance to Canadian healthcare practices.
Study Limitations
The primary limitation of this study is its very small sample size of seven patients, which limits the generalizability and statistical power of the findings.
