What Researchers Did
Researchers evaluated the neuropsychological improvement after hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) in children and adults with chronic brain injury.
What They Found
In Study 1, 21 children with chronic brain injury treated with HBOT showed significant improvement in daily living, socialization, communication, and motor skills compared to 42 control children. In Study 2, 21 treated adults made significant gains in all neuropsychological areas tested compared to 42 control adults.
What This Means for Canadian Patients
For Canadian patients with chronic brain injury, these findings suggest that hyperbaric oxygen therapy could potentially help improve neuropsychological and physiological functions. This may offer a new avenue for treatment to lessen the neurological impact of their condition.
Canadian Relevance
This study has no direct Canadian connection.
Study Limitations
A key limitation of this study is the absence of a clear sham HBOT treatment group, which raises the possibility of a placebo effect.
