What Researchers Did
Researchers reviewed the scientific literature on why HBOT can sometimes cause seizures and other toxic effects, examining the biological mechanisms and what can be done to prevent them.
What They Found
High-pressure oxygen raises reactive oxygen species (ROS) in tissues, which damages cell receptors and lowers levels of GABA, the brain's main calming neurotransmitter, increasing seizure risk. Elevated pressure itself also directly inhibits GABA receptors. Acidosis (excess acid in the blood) further lowers the seizure threshold. The authors propose that giving antioxidants, pyridoxine (vitamin B6), and low-dose sedatives before HBOT could prevent these toxic effects.
Canadian Relevance
No direct Canadian connection identified.
Study Limitations
The proposed prevention strategies (antioxidants, pyridoxine, sedatives) are theoretical and have not yet been tested in controlled clinical trials.
