What Researchers Did
Researchers conducted a meta-analysis of 147 patients with noniatrogenic spinal cord ischaemia over the past 10 years to evaluate its incidence, spinal levels involved, and efficacy of different management strategies.
What They Found
Noniatrogenic spinal cord ischaemia was most commonly idiopathic (47%), followed by systemic/chronic conditions (23.6%) and aortic vascular pathology (20%). Rehabilitation was used in 53.7% of patients, and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) drainage significantly improved outcomes at discharge (p=0.001).
Canadian Relevance
This study does not have a direct Canadian connection.
Study Limitations
A limitation of this meta-analysis of case reports and series is the potential for heterogeneity and reporting bias across the included studies.
