What Researchers Did
Researchers conducted a meta-analysis of 147 patients with noniatrogenic spinal cord ischemia over the past 10 years to evaluate its incidence, spinal levels involved, and efficacy of different management strategies.
What They Found
Noniatrogenic spinal cord ischemia was most commonly idiopathic (47%), followed by systemic/chronic conditions (23.6%) and aortic vascular pathology (20%). Rehabilitation was used in 53.7% of patients, and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) drainage significantly improved outcomes at discharge (p=0.001).
What This Means for Canadian Patients
Canadian patients experiencing noniatrogenic spinal cord ischemia may benefit from a comprehensive diagnostic workup to identify underlying causes, which are often idiopathic or related to systemic conditions. Treatment strategies, including rehabilitation and cerebrospinal fluid drainage, show promise for improving outcomes and should be considered in their care.
Canadian Relevance
This study does not have a direct Canadian connection.
Study Limitations
A limitation of this meta-analysis of case reports and series is the potential for heterogeneity and reporting bias across the included studies.
