What Researchers Did
Researchers placed 90 dental implants in the irradiated jawbones of 15 patients who had previously undergone treatment for maxillofacial malignant tumors, without using adjunctive hyperbaric oxygen therapy.
What They Found
After a follow-up period of 1 to 8 years, 88 of the 90 implants remained stable, resulting in a 97.8% success rate. Prosthesis stability was 100%, with only two implants lost early in two different patients.
What This Means for Canadian Patients
This suggests that oral implant rehabilitation can be a safe and successful option for Canadian patients who have received radiation therapy for head and neck cancers. Patients may not require adjunctive hyperbaric oxygen therapy, potentially simplifying treatment protocols.
Canadian Relevance
This study does not have a direct Canadian connection as it was conducted internationally.
Study Limitations
A limitation of this study is the relatively small sample size of 15 patients, which may limit the generalizability of the findings.
