What Researchers Did
Researchers retrospectively reviewed medical records of patients who experienced seizures during hyperbaric oxygen treatment (HBOT) at two Australian hospitals to identify causes other than oxygen toxicity.
What They Found
Out of all patients treated between November 1989 and June 2020, four cases of 'oxygen toxicity seizure mimics' were identified. These mimics included posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome, pethidine toxicity, epilepsy from previous subarachnoid haemorrhage, and severe hypoglycaemia.
What This Means for Canadian Patients
Canadian patients undergoing hyperbaric oxygen treatment should be aware that seizure-like activity may stem from various underlying conditions, not solely oxygen toxicity. This understanding can help ensure accurate diagnosis and appropriate management, preventing potential complications.
Canadian Relevance
There is no direct Canadian connection mentioned in this study.
Study Limitations
This study is limited by its retrospective design and small sample size of only four identified cases.
