What Researchers Did
Researchers investigated how high oxygen levels, both at normal and increased pressure, damaged human cells and if Vitamin C could help protect them.
What They Found
Exposure to 100% oxygen, especially at 3 atma hyperbaric pressure, inhibited cell multiplication and led to massive cell death. Adding 100 micrograms/ml of sodium L-ascorbate to unexposed cells nearly doubled their growth. When ascorbate was added after oxygen exposure, it led to 2-12 times greater cell growth compared to exposed cells, partially reversing the damage.
What This Means for Canadian Patients
This laboratory study on cells suggests that antioxidants like Vitamin C might offer some protection against oxygen-induced cell damage. While not directly applicable to patients, it provides basic insights into how cells respond to high oxygen levels, a factor in hyperbaric oxygen therapy.
Canadian Relevance
No direct Canadian connection identified.
Study Limitations
This study was conducted on cell cultures in a lab, meaning its findings may not directly translate to complex biological systems in living organisms or human patients.
