What Researchers Did
Researchers evaluated the effectiveness of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) combined with standard non-surgical treatment for periodontitis in 14 patients with type 2 diabetes.
What They Found
The study found significantly better reductions in probing depth (PD) and gains in clinical attachment level (CAL) in the group receiving hyperbaric oxygen therapy compared to the control group. Both groups, totaling 14 patients, showed a reduction in bleeding on probing (BOP) after treatment.
What This Means for Canadian Patients
Canadian patients with type 2 diabetes and periodontitis might benefit from hyperbaric oxygen therapy as an additional treatment to improve their periodontal health. This could potentially lead to better management of their oral health complications associated with diabetes.
Canadian Relevance
This pilot study was not conducted in Canada and has no direct Canadian connection.
Study Limitations
A significant limitation of this pilot study is its very small sample size of only 14 patients, which limits the generalizability of the findings.
