What Researchers Did
Researchers conducted the first case study to measure neurocognitive abilities before, during, and after hyperbaric oxygen therapy in a teenage male patient with foetal alcohol syndrome.
What They Found
After 40 hyperbaric treatments, the patient's performance improved in all 6 neurocognitive categories, with word composite scores increasing from 55% to 73% and memory composite scores from 38% to 55%. Reaction time improved from 1.03 to 0.53 seconds, impulse control from 8 to 5, and subjective symptoms diminished by 94%, with verbal memory maintained at 73% six months later.
Canadian Relevance
This specific study has no direct Canadian connection as it was conducted elsewhere.
Study Limitations
As a single case study, these findings cannot be generalized to the broader population of individuals with foetal alcohol syndrome.
