What Researchers Did
Researchers comprehensively described the activities and reviewed clinical trials, translational science, and ancillary activities of the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group (RTOG) Gynecologic Oncology Working Group over 40 years.
What They Found
Over 40 years, the RTOG Gynecologic Oncology Working Group conducted numerous clinical trials to improve overall survival and reduce morbidity in women with cervical or endometrial cancer. For instance, RTOG 7920 showed improved overall survival in stages IB-IIB cervical carcinoma patients receiving prophylactic para-aortic irradiation. Additionally, RTOG 9001 demonstrated that cisplatin and 5-FU chemoradiotherapy significantly improved overall survival for advanced cervix cancer.
What This Means for Canadian Patients
These findings highlight effective radiation and chemoradiation strategies that have improved outcomes for women with cervical and endometrial cancers. Canadian oncologists can continue to apply these evidence-based approaches to optimize treatment plans for their patients.
