What Researchers Did
Researchers compared the outcomes of radiotherapy combined with hyperbaric oxygen therapy against radiotherapy alone in patients with malignant brain tumours.
What They Found
In patients receiving hyperbaric oxygen therapy alongside radiotherapy, all 9 patients (100%) experienced more than 50% tumor regression, with complete disappearance in 4 patients (44%). In contrast, only 4 out of 12 patients (33%) receiving radiotherapy alone showed any decrease in tumor size, and all 12 patients in this group died within 36 months.
What This Means for Canadian Patients
This pilot study suggests that hyperbaric oxygen therapy could potentially enhance the effectiveness of radiotherapy for Canadian patients battling malignant gliomas, a severe form of brain cancer. The findings indicate a promising avenue for improving tumour response, offering a potential new strategy to consider in treatment plans.

Study Limitations
As a pilot study, this research involved a small number of participants and requires further investigation with larger, controlled trials to confirm these promising initial findings.
