What Researchers Did
Researchers conducted a population-based cohort study using the Taiwan National Health Insurance Database to evaluate the impact of hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) therapy on cardiovascular outcomes and mortality in 5312 patients with chronic osteomyelitis.
What They Found
After propensity-score matching, the hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) group showed significantly lower 1-year mortality (HR 0.49; 95% CI, 0.25-0.95) compared to the non-HBO group. The HBO group also experienced a lower risk of stroke (HR 0.46; 95% CI, 0.34-0.63), but HBO therapy did not reduce the risk of myocardial infarction.
What This Means for Canadian Patients
For Canadian patients with chronic osteomyelitis, hyperbaric oxygen therapy may offer a potential benefit in reducing the risk of early mortality and stroke. This suggests that HBO therapy could be considered as an adjunct treatment to improve overall cardiovascular outcomes in this patient population.
Canadian Relevance
This study was conducted using data from Taiwan and does not have a direct Canadian connection.
Study Limitations
As an observational cohort study, it cannot establish causality and may be subject to unmeasured confounding factors.
