Summary

What Researchers Did

Researchers presented a case series of female fibromyalgia patients who recalled repressed traumatic childhood sexual abuse memories during hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT).

What They Found

Nine fibromyalgia patients, including three detailed cases, experienced sudden retrieval of repressed memories during HBOT. As these memories surfaced, their physical pain related to fibromyalgia subsided, and one patient showed prefrontal cortex reactivation on brain SPECT after HBOT.

What This Means for Canadian Patients

For Canadian patients, this preliminary research suggests that HBOT might offer a novel approach to fibromyalgia treatment, particularly for those with a history of trauma. However, these findings are very early and require much more investigation before clinical application.

Canadian Relevance

This study has no direct Canadian connection.

Study Limitations

A significant limitation is that this was a case series, which prevents generalization of findings or establishing causality.
