What Researchers Did
Researchers investigated the effects of hyperbaric oxygen (HBO2) preconditioning on myocardial biomarkers of cardioprotection in 81 patients undergoing coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery.
What They Found
The study found no significant differences in myocardial eNOS and HSP72 quantities between the HBO2 (n=41) and control (n=40) groups. However, in the HBO2 group, these biomarkers increased following ischemia and reperfusion, suggesting potential endogenous cardioprotection.
What This Means for Canadian Patients
If proven effective, hyperbaric oxygen preconditioning could offer a new way to protect the heart during bypass surgery, potentially improving recovery for patients. However, further research is required before this approach could be considered for routine clinical use in Canada.
Canadian Relevance
This study was not conducted in Canada and therefore does not have direct Canadian relevance.
Study Limitations
A limitation is that the study focused on exploratory secondary endpoints and specific biomarkers, which may not fully represent overall cardioprotection.
