What Researchers Did
Researchers studied 30 stroke patients to see if hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) combined with physiotherapy improved their recovery compared to physiotherapy alone.
What They Found
Patients receiving 24 sessions of HBOT plus physiotherapy showed significant improvements in motor function (NIHSS score from 7.27 to 5.46) and cognitive function (MMSE score from 24.8 to 26.73). This group also saw significant improvements in quality of life, except for bodily pain and vitality, which was not observed in the physiotherapy-only group. However, when comparing the HBOT group directly to the physiotherapy-only group after treatment, the differences were not statistically significant.
What This Means for Canadian Patients
For Canadian patients recovering from an ischemic stroke, this pilot study suggests that adding 24 sessions of HBOT to conventional physiotherapy might lead to better improvements in motor function, cognitive abilities, and overall quality of life. While direct comparisons between groups were not statistically significant, the individual improvements within the HBOT group indicate a potential benefit for enhancing recovery beyond standard care.
Canadian Relevance
No direct Canadian connection identified.
Study Limitations
This was a pilot study with a small number of participants, and the direct comparison between the HBOT and control groups did not show statistically significant differences.
